A Day in the life of a lesson horse

Hi! I’m Linda. I’m a lesson horse at Misty Angel Stables. I am a mare and I am 16 years old. This is a day in my life.

In the morning, I woke up at 7 am, I think? Well, I know I wake up when it’s near breakfast time. Like all the horses in the stables, we placed our head over the stall door and neighed for the human to bring our grain faster.

Soon, Cerah came in the stables with our feed bucket. She got a pink feed bucket full of my favourite grain in her hand. She opened my stall door and placed the feed bucket on the floor.

Yum!

After I finished my grain (I licked the feed bucket clean), Cerah took the bucket away and closed my stall door. Usually, the humans let the horses in their stalls 2 hours before taking them for a ride or to the pasture. After 2 hours, Lucie (a rider who is a slightly experienced, enough to ride alone but not on a crazy horse) came to my stall with a pink halter. “Come on, we’re going for a ride.” she said. She opened my stall door and placed the pink halter on my head.

I followed Lucie and she tied me to a hitching post. She quickly groomed me, placed her saddle on my back and tighten the girth. Then, she placed her bridle on my head. I don’t like the feeling of the bit in my mouth but I generally settle in quickly once it’s in my mouth.

Once that was done, she took a mounting block so she could climb on my back. we headed to the arena!

In the arena, we first warmed up. Then, we did some flatwork for an hour. Afterward, she led me back to the stables, took off my saddle. She then used the mounting block to climb on my back again. I got a feeling that we’re going to the field!

We trotted to the field, it’s a big field with some of Misty Angel Stables horses and Alice ranch’s horses. They are in semi-liberty. They have been living there for quite a while already.

After that, Lucie took off my bridle and put on the pink halter and groomed me. Then, she led me in the pasture. “Bye, Linda!”.

It was lunch break. The humans poured grain in the manger of the pasture for all the horses to share (the one in the pasture).

And, of course, I ate the grass too.

Generally, the humans leave the horses in their stall or in the pasture after 2 hours after lunch. After lunch, usually, there is a lesson of…..beginner? Well, the riders aren’t really good at horse riding. Selah should be here soon…… Ah, there she is! She opened the pasture’s gate and came near me and place the pink halter on my head. “Hi, Linda!”.

She led me out of the pasture, closed the gate then tied me to the hitching post. She groomed me slowly, placed a saddle on my back, tighten the girth and then put on a bridle on my head.

(Sorry, I forgot to take a photo of Selah putting a saddle on Linda’s back) 🙁

Then she took the mounting block so that she can climb on my back.

we headed the arena! Morgan (the other girl in the same lesson, Selah’s friend) was already there with Chubs, the horse she likes to rides. The girls greeted each other with happy voices, Chubs and I greeted with happy squeals. Then, Cerah, the instructor, came.

We started warming up with a walk, a trot and a few other exercises. We also worked on halts.

At the end of the lesson, we took turns to canter. Morgan was up first. Selah and I went to the other half of the arena since we only canter on half of the arena. Then, it was our turn.

(sorry for the bad filming)

After the lesson, we cooled off by walking and then the riders dismounted.

Then, Selah led me out of the arena, untacked me and placed the pink halter on my head before leading me into my stall. Once I was in there, she took off the pink halter and closed my stall door.”There you go, Linda! Let me just put your tack away then I will be back!” And she did! With carrots! Yum!

She left. Soon, it was the evening. The humans give us food but this time, they put the food in the manger of our stall.

Soon after, it was time to turn the lights out. I said goodnight to the other horses in the stables and then laid down on the soft bedding of my stall and fell asleep.

That was a day in the life of a lesson horse. Hope you enjoy it!
